Penstemon Loop is a 2.9-mile moderate hike in Idaho's Sawtooth National Forest, within the Minidoka Ranger District. The trail is an out-and-back that climbs about 680 feet one way, with the high point at 6,901 feet and the low at 6,665 feet. The total round-trip gain is about 1,400 feet, and the steepest stretch comes at about 2.4 miles, where the grade reaches 16 percent. The route starts at roughly 6,722 feet and reaches its peak before turning back. The trip takes about 2.5 hours, so plan on a full morning or afternoon. The Forest Service manages the land. The trail sits close to several other destinations. Upper Penstemon Campground and Lower Penstemon are both within half a mile, and Magic Mountain Resort is about 0.2 miles away. For more hiking, Trail Canyon lies about 0.9 miles off.
