Split Rock is a climbing area in California's Eldorado National Forest, within the Placerville Ranger District. The Forest Service manages the land, and the routes here are all sport climbs, with grades ranging from 5.6 to 5.10a. The area sits close to two other climbing areas, The Scone and the Sugarloaf Area, and the Sugarloaf Peak hike lies about 0.2 miles away. For comfortable conditions, late spring and early fall stand out. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run to highs around 72°F in May and 66°F in October, while July and August average highs near 90°F. That station sits about 1,200 feet below the climbing area, so temperatures up high run cooler. Among the five routes, Fossilmax is 5.9 and Prime Rib is 5.10a. The closest places to stay are Sand Flat Campground, about 1.2 miles away, and Harvey West Cabin, roughly 2.3 miles off.
