Lower Lola Montez is an easy, out-and-back hike of about a mile in California's Tahoe National Forest, within the Truckee Ranger District. The trail gains about 350 feet, starting at roughly 6,530 feet and reaching a high point of about 6,900 feet. The route is on natural ground, and both horses and bikes are allowed, so it works for riders and equestrians as well as hikers. The surrounding area offers a mix of mountain biking, climbing and paddling, and the trail is open year-round. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the Sagehen Creek weather station, about 11 miles away, show July highs near 80°F with lows around 37°F. Winter highs there sit in the low 40s, with lows near 15°F. The station sits about 560 feet lower than the trail's high point, so expect temperatures on the trail to run a little cooler. Close by are the Lower Lola Montez Trail for mountain biking and Hole in the Ground, about 1.3 miles away. Lower Castle Creek offers canoeing about 1.5 miles off, and climbers can head to Castle Peak, about 2 miles away.
