Smaug is a bouldering area in the Flagstaff Ranger District of Coconino National Forest in Arizona, managed by the Forest Service. It sits among a cluster of climbing areas, with 2) Dragon Egg and Main Drainage each about 0.1 mile away. The area is a bouldering destination, with seven routes all rated on the V scale. The hardest is Arkenstone at V9, and the easiest is Greedy Dragon at V6. Smaug itself is a V6 boulder problem, and Smaug's Treasure is a V7. The routes were all first ascended by D Mauz between 2014 and 2020. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Ft Valley, about 7.7 miles away, show May highs around 71°F and October highs around 66°F, with July and August bringing the most wet days. The Blue Dot Trail and Forces of Nature mountain biking trails are within half a mile. Little Elden Springs Horsecamp is about 3 miles away, and Lockett Meadow Campground is about 8.5 miles away.
