Winter is a hard hike in Arizona's Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, on the Clifton Ranger District. The route is an out-and-back of about 16.4 miles, with a one-way elevation gain of 1,323 feet, from a low point of 5,478 feet to a high of 6,410 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trailhead is at Alma Trailhead (#41), which is open year-round. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows horses and bikes. It is not an accessible trail. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run from highs around 75°F in April to 76°F in October, while July and August average highs near 92°F. Several other hikes start close by. Little Blue is about 0.3 miles away, Stateline about 0.5 miles, and Hannah Trail about 0.7 miles. The Blue River, a canoeing spot, is about 7.2 miles away.
