Auger is an easy out-and-back hike of about 2.8 miles in the Clifton Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in eastern Arizona. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is rated easy with a one-way climb of about 388 feet. The route starts at a low point of about 6,659 feet and reaches a high of about 7,056 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about 1.2 miles in, with a grade of about 14 percent. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows horses, but not bikes or accessible access. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at a similar elevation show May highs around 75°F and October highs around 71°F, while July and August bring the most wet days, about 14 and 15 a month. Yam Canyon Trail is about 1.4 miles away, and the Blue River offers canoeing about 2 miles off. Winter Cabin and Horse Mesa are both within about 3.4 miles.
