Hackberry (Lavaca County)

Hackberry is a ghost town in Lavaca County, Texas, situated along Farm to Market Road 532 about eleven miles northeast of Hallettsville. Its story begins in 1846 when Ludwig Von Neuhaus, a German immigrant, settled at what was then a midpoint stop on the route between Houston and San Antonio. The community took its name from a grove of hackberry trees that grew in the area, and Neuhaus farmed the land for several years before establishing a business there in 1853.

Today Hackberry exists as an unincorporated area with little remaining of its former community character. Visitors passing through on FM 532 will find a rural Texas landscape rather than any developed historic site, and there are no known formal amenities or marked attractions on the ground.
