Provident City

Provident City is a ghost town in the far southern portion of Colorado County, Texas, situated along County Road 190. Its origins trace to a land promotion scheme in 1909, and for a time the settlement held genuine promise. That promise faded when it became clear that no railroad would ever reach the area, prompting residents to gradually leave.

By 1953 the post office had shut down, and the surrounding land was absorbed into ranching operations. Almost nothing of the original town remains in any publicly accessible form, though one structure — the original hotel — still stands on private property. Visitors passing through today will find little more than open country; this is a site for those with a strong interest in Texas settlement history rather than a destination with on-the-ground attractions.
