About Petersburg (Lavaca County)

Petersburg was once the original county seat of Lavaca County, established when the county was organized in August 1846. Situated on the east bank of the Lavaca River, roughly six miles southeast of Hallettsville along Farm to Market Road 2616, the town held administrative importance in the county's earliest days before fading into history.

Today Petersburg is a ghost town. Visitors should expect little in the way of physical remains — the site is primarily of historical interest rather than a destination with preserved structures or developed amenities. The rural riverside setting along the Lavaca River provides the main draw for those curious about early Texas county history.
