About Elkhorn Scenic Byway
Elkhorn Scenic Byway is a 109.1-mile drive in northeastern Oregon, managed by the Forest Service and designated both a National Forest Scenic Byway and an Oregon State Scenic Byway. Baker City is the largest town along the way, and the route also passes through Haines, North Powder, Sumpter and Granite. That makes it easy to break the drive into stretches between towns. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Union point to June and September as the most comfortable times to drive. June highs run in the mid-70s with lows in the upper 40s. September brings highs in the upper 70s, lows in the low 40s and only about five wet days. Midwinter averages a high of 39°F with several snow days a month. Several stops sit right along the byway. Union Creek Campground and Anthony Lake offer places to camp, and the Phillips Lake North Shoreline Trail is a short hiking option. The North Fork John Day River, about a mile off the route, is a paddling choice.
