The "W" Trail is a short, easy out-and-back hike in southern Oregon on Bureau of Land Management land within the Medford Grants Pass Field Office. The route starts at about 1,378 feet and climbs to 1,547 feet before returning, with a total gain of about 459 feet over the round trip. The steepest stretch comes near the start, around 0.5 miles in, where the grade reaches about 13%. The trail is easy to fit into a short outing. It takes about an hour to complete, and several other short trails sit within a few tenths of a mile, including the Backside Loop and Cloverlawn Loop, so you can string them together for a longer walk. For comfortable weather, late spring and early fall are the best bets. A nearby weather station in Grants Pass typically averages highs around 74°F in May and 70°F in October, while July and August average highs near 91°F. That station sits roughly 600 feet lower than the trail, so temperatures on the trail run a little cooler.
