Trail #3C is a moderate out-and-back hike in Oregon's Willamette National Forest, within the McKenzie River Ranger District. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail's route is steady, with the steepest stretch around mile 2, where the grade reaches about 9 percent. The hike covers 8.7 miles round trip, with a total elevation gain and loss of about 922 feet. The high point is 4,729 feet, and the starting elevation is about 4,592 feet. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Santiam Junction weather station put July and August highs around 76°F with lows near 42°F. That station sits roughly 1,000 feet lower than the trail, so temperatures up high run cooler. The estimated time for the trip is about 3.5 hours. Trail #3B starts just 0.1 mile away, and the Patjens Lake Loop and Big Lake West Campground are both about 1.8 miles off.
