Santiam Wagon Road East is a moderate out-and-back hike in Oregon's Willamette National Forest, within the McKenzie River Ranger District. The trail is about 5.8 miles long, rising from roughly 3,188 feet to about 4,120 feet, with the steepest stretch near the start, where the grade reaches about 17 percent. Bikes and horses are both allowed, and the surface is natural. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the Santiam Junction weather station, about 4 miles away, show July and August highs near 76°F with lows around 42°F, while winter highs stay in the mid-30s. The route is open year-round, and the Forest Service manages the land. Fish Lake Remount Depot Cabins sits less than a mile away, and the Clear Lake hike is about 0.8 miles off. Coldwater Cove campground is about 2.3 miles away, and the McKenzie River offers canoeing about 4.6 miles from the trail.
