Salal Trail is an easy, short hike in Oregon's coastal lowlands, about 1.6 miles from the community of Oysterville. The trail is an out-and-back with a total length of 3.2 miles, and it gains about 714 feet of elevation on the way up. The highest point on the route reaches 410 feet, and the steepest stretch comes at about 0.8 miles, where the grade reaches 13 percent. Late summer is the warmest stretch. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Newport run to highs around 66°F in September, and the station sits roughly 400 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the trail run a little cooler. The trip takes about 1.5 hours. Ocean View Trail starts just 0.3 miles away, and Gentle Ben Trail and Simple Jack Trail are within about a mile and a half. Paddlers can head to Beaver Creek, about 4.4 miles off.
