Opal Canyon Trail is an easy out-and-back hike in Oregon's Crooked River National Grassland, part of the Ochoco National Forest, about 2.8 miles long with a total elevation gain of 170 feet. The trail runs from a low point of about 2,380 feet to a high of about 2,487 feet, and the steepest section, a 15% grade, comes within the first tenth of a mile. The route starts at about 2,425 feet, and the climb is gentle enough that it makes a good short outing. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Madras run to highs in the upper 80s in July and August, while winter brings highs in the low 40s and a few snowy days each month from December through February. The Pink Trail lies just 0.1 mile away, and the Otter Bench and Horny Hollow Trail are both within about 1.4 miles. For an overnight stay, Whychus Crossing campground sits about 5.7 miles off.
