Mazama Trail #625 is a 3.65-mile hike in the Mount Hood Wilderness, part of the Hood River Ranger District of Mt. Hood National Forest. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail falls entirely within designated wilderness. The route is an out-and-back that starts at about 3,400 feet and climbs to a high point of 5,615 feet, with a total round-trip gain of about 4,933 feet. The steepest stretch comes around mile 2.5, where the grade reaches about 32 percent. That makes the trail a serious challenge, and it's rated expert. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the Government Camp weather station, 7 miles away, show July and August highs around 70°F with only four wet days a month. Winter brings a different story, and there is no indication of current trail conditions, so no need to check them before heading out.
