Timberline is a hard hike in Oregon's Mount Hood Wilderness, within the Zigzag Ranger District of Mt. Hood National Forest. The trail is an out-and-back that climbs from about 3,300 feet to roughly 4,700 feet, with a total gain of nearly 4,900 feet over the course of the round trip. The steepest stretch comes at about 2.3 miles in, where the grade reaches 46 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Government Camp show July and August highs around 70°F with only about four wet days a month, while winter brings highs in the mid-30s and rain on most days. The hike starts right next to the Mt. Hood Timberline Trail, and Yocum Ridge is about half a mile away. For an overnight stay, Lost Creek campground is about 2.6 miles off, and the Sandy River offers canoeing about 1.6 miles away.
