Captain Cook is a short, paved out-and-back hike in Oregon's Siuslaw National Forest, within the Central Coast Ranger District-ODNRA. The trail is 1.2 miles long and climbs about 97 feet from its low point of 36 feet to a high of 151 feet. It is an easy walk with a gentle grade, and the steepest stretch comes early on, at about 12 percent. The trail is managed by the Forest Service and is open year-round. The trailhead is the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center Trailheads Trailhead, and the route is paved, so it works well for walking, biking or a quick stop. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Yachats weather station show July and August highs around 64 to 65°F, with only five or six wet days a month. Winter runs cooler and wetter, with highs in the low 50s and rain on about 17 to 20 days a month from December through March. Several other hikes start close by, including Giant Spruce, Discovery Loop and Oregon Coast, all about 0.1 mile away. Cape Perpetua campground is about 0.4 mile away.
