Photo: andyarthur, CC BY 2.0 (via Flickr)Indian Pass Trail is a 9.5-mile point-to-point hike in New York's High Peaks Wilderness, managed by the State Department of Conservation. The route rises from about 1,885 feet to a high point of 2,873 feet, with a total elevation gain of 1,372 feet. The climb is rolling, and the steepest stretch comes at about 1.2 miles in, where the grade reaches 55 percent. The trail is rated moderate. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Newcomb, NY, run to highs around 77°F in July and 74°F in August, though that station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the pass run cooler. Winter is harsh, with January highs near 26°F and lows around 4°F. The trail is not open to bikes or horses. Plan for about four hours on foot. The East River Trail and the Calamity Brook - Indian Pass Crossover Trail, both used for cross-country skiing, lie within a mile. The Mount Adams Trail and Calamity Brook Trail are also close by.
