Domingo Baca is an easy hike of about 2.9 miles in the Sandia Ranger District of Cibola National Forest, on city-managed land. The trail starts at the Elena Gallegos picnic area and reaches a high point of about 7,089 feet, with a total elevation gain of 526 feet on the out-and-back route. The most comfortable months for a visit are typically late spring and early fall. Typical averages from the nearby Sandia Park weather station run to highs around 73°F in May and 77°F in September, while winter highs sit in the low 40s. Bikes are allowed on the natural-surface trail. Climbers will find the Sandia Mountains climbing area about 0.4 miles away and the Lower Domingo Baca Slabs (AKA: The Ribcage) about 0.5 miles away. The Nature Trail and the Kiwanis Picnic Area Trail are both within a mile.
