Domingo Baca is an easy, short hike in New Mexico's Sandia Mountain Wilderness, part of the Sandia Ranger District of Cibola National Forest. It's a 0.5-mile out-and-back with a 100-foot elevation gain, so it's a quick addition to a day in the area. The trail starts at the Elena Gallegos picnic area and climbs from a low point of about 6,690 feet to a high of about 6,810 feet. The surrounding land is managed as city land, and the hike's close proximity to several other trails and climbing areas makes it easy to fold into a longer outing. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Sandia Park show May highs around 73°F and October highs around 65°F, while winter highs stay in the low to mid 40s. Climbers can find the Lower Domingo Baca Slabs (AKA: The Ribcage) and the Sandia Mountains about half a mile away. The Nature Trail and Trail 230A are each roughly 0.8 miles off.
