Dunn Creek is a hard hike in the Libby Ranger District of the Kootenai National Forest in northwest Montana, managed by the Forest Service. The route is about 11 miles long and is an out-and-back with a total elevation gain of about 2,160 feet, climbing from a low of roughly 3,290 feet to a high of about 5,000 feet. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Libby run to highs around 78°F in July and August, with only about six wet days a month. That station sits well below the trail, so expect temperatures up high to run cooler. Bikes and horses are both allowed on the natural-surface trail. The closest neighbors are Sugarloaf Lookout, about 2 miles away, and Richards Mountain, about 3 miles off. Fairview Ranger Station offers camping about 5.5 miles away, and the Kootenai River is about 8 miles out.
