Waterfall is a hard hike in Idaho's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, within the Palisades Ranger District. The route is an out-and-back of about 7.5 miles, with a total elevation gain of about 2,109 feet, from a low point of roughly 6,724 feet to a high of about 8,835 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is open year-round. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows both horses and bikes, so it works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. The climb is a steady one, and the route is rated hard, so plan on a full day on foot. Vacation Canyon Trail and Dry Canyon both start within a quarter mile, and Upper Lake Trail is about 1.8 miles away. For an overnight base, Palisades Creek campground sits about 5.8 miles off.
