Soldier Basin is a hard hike in Idaho's Salmon-Challis National Forest, on the Middle Fork Ranger District. The trail is an out-and-back that climbs from about 5,640 feet to nearly 9,000 feet, with a total elevation gain of 1,894 feet over a route of about 27 miles. Horses are allowed, and the trail surface is natural, so riders can take the route on foot or on horseback. Bikes are not permitted. The trip is open year-round, and the Forest Service manages the land. The climb is long and steep, so plan on a full day or more. The high point of 9,000 feet makes this a mountain objective rather than a short outing. Several other destinations sit within a few miles. Fall Creek and Cutthroat are both hikes about 3 miles away, and Soldier Ridge is a little farther at about 3.6 miles. For an overnight base, Dagger Falls Campground is roughly 7 miles off.
