Salt Basin is a hard hike in Idaho's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, within the Montpelier Ranger District. The trail is an out-and-back that climbs from about 6,400 feet to roughly 8,300 feet, with a total elevation gain of about 1,900 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is open year-round. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows both horses and bikes. That makes it a versatile option for riders and pack animals, and the route's length of about 20 miles means planning for a full day on foot or on horseback. The climb is a steady one, and the high point sits well above the low point. For a shorter outing, the DIP CREEK and Ephraim-Dry Creek hikes both start within half a mile. Allred Flat Campground, about 7 miles away, offers a place to stay, and Salt Creek, a canoeing spot across the line in Wyoming, is about 4 miles off.
