Red is a 4.25-mile out-and-back hike in Idaho's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, within the Montpelier Ranger District. The trail rises about 200 feet from a low point of 6,872 feet to a high of 7,067 feet, and it is rated moderate. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is open year-round. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows both horses and bikes, so it works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. The climb is gentle, with the most gain spread across the full length of the route. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Bern, Idaho, show July highs around 85°F with lows near 46°F, and snow is common from November through April. That station sits about 1,100 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the route run cooler. Several other hikes start within about a mile, including Dip Creek, Ephraim-Dry Creek and Salt Basin. Allred Flat Campground, about 8 miles away, offers a place to stay.
