Cabin is a 4.9-mile out-and-back hike in Idaho's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, within the Montpelier Ranger District. The trail starts at about 7,860 feet and climbs to a high point of 7,862 feet, with a total gain of 1,751 feet over the course of the round trip. The steepest stretch comes at about 1.6 miles in, where the grade reaches 15 percent. The route is rated moderate, and the trail surface is natural. Bikes and horses are both allowed, so the hike works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Afton, Wyoming, show July highs around 80°F with lows near 44°F and only about six wet days. That station sits roughly 1,600 feet lower than the trail, so temperatures on the hike run cooler. The trip takes about 2.5 hours, and the trail is open year-round. Giraffe Creek and Boulevard are both within a mile, and Little Elk Creek is about 1.3 miles away. For an overnight base, Clear Creek Guard Station is about 5.3 miles off.
