Red Mountain is a hard hike in Idaho's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, within the Montpelier Ranger District. The trail is an out-and-back that climbs from about 6,958 feet to 8,290 feet, with a total elevation gain of 740 feet over a distance of about 8.9 miles. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is open year-round. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows both horses and bikes, so it works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. Plan for a full day on foot, and expect the climb to feel steeper as you approach the high point. Several other trails sit within a couple of miles, including Forest Trail 112 and Lower Pruess Creek, each about 1.6 miles away, and Beartrap at 2.1 miles. For an overnight base, Clear Creek Guard Station is about 3.7 miles off.
