Middle Fork Hat Creek is a moderate hike of about 5.6 miles in the Salmon-Cobalt Ranger District of Idaho's Salmon-Challis National Forest, managed by the Forest Service. The trail is an out-and-back with a one-way climb of about 1,291 feet, starting at roughly 7,511 feet and reaching about 8,810 feet at the high point. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows both horses and bikes, so it works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. That makes it a flexible option for a day on foot or on horseback. Iron Mountain lies about a mile away, and North Fork Hat Creek is about 1.3 miles off. Iron Lake Campground is about 3 miles away, and Lower Iron Lake is about 3.1 miles away.
