Crooked River is a hard hike in Idaho's Boise National Forest, within the Idaho City Ranger District. The trail is an out-and-back route of about 23 miles, with a one-way elevation gain of 626 feet, starting at the Upper Crooked River Trailhead and ending at the Lower Crooked River Trailhead. The trail is managed by the Forest Service and is open year-round. The trail is a natural-surface route that allows both horses and bikes. The climb takes you from a low point of about 4,315 feet to a high of about 5,418 feet. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Lowman weather station, which sits well below the trail, show July highs around 87°F with lows near 45°F, while winter highs there stay in the low to mid 30s. Beaver Creek is a hike just 0.1 mile away, and Crooked Rock, a climbing area, is about 0.6 mile off. Edna Creek Campground is about a mile away, and Willow Creek Campground is roughly 3.7 miles away.
