Amber Gulch is a hard hike in Idaho's Hemingway-Boulders Wilderness, part of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area within the Sawtooth National Forest. The trail is an out-and-back that climbs from about 7,230 feet to about 8,770 feet, with a total elevation gain of 1,529 feet over a route of about 6.9 miles. The trail is on natural surface and is open to horses. Bikes are not allowed. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is open year-round. The climb is a steady one, and the route is best suited to hikers who plan for a long day on foot. The trailhead sits within the wilderness, so expect to carry everything you need for the trip. Nearby, the West Fork-North Fork and Upper North Fork hikes are both within a couple of miles. Caribou Campground is about 3 miles away, and the Hemingway-Boulders Wilderness offers river fishing about 3.8 miles off.
