Gluteus Maximus is a 0.76-mile cross-country ski route in Colorado's White River National Forest, within the Dillon Ranger District. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail lies at an elevation of about 10,000 feet, with the high point at 10,206 feet. The climb is rated hard, and the route rises about 211 feet from its starting point at 10,004 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about 0.37 miles in, where the grade reaches 12%. The climb isn't one-way: the route also loses about 163 feet, making it roughly balanced on the way up and down. Winter is the natural season for cross-country skiing. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Dillon put January highs around 31°F with lows near 1°F. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the route run cooler. Hang Ten, a cross-country ski route, is 0.2 miles away. The Peaks Connection mountain bike trail is 0.1 miles off, and Raspberry Boulders, a climbing area, is 0.9 miles away. For an overnight base, Peak One Campground is about 6.7 miles away.
