North Derby is an easy out-and-back hike on the Forest Service's natural-surface trails in Colorado's Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, within the Yampa Ranger District. It covers about 4.4 miles round trip, rising from 10,270 feet to 1,1197 feet, a total climb of about 757 feet. The trail is accessible to horses, and the Forest Service lists it as not an accessible route. The trailhead is at Stillwater, and the hike is open year round, so it works well as a short outing in any season. Cold Springs Campground sits less than a mile away, and Smith Lake and Edge Lake are both about a mile off. Bear River is roughly 1.3 miles away.
