Old Sawmill is a hard hike of about 5.6 miles in the Alpine Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in eastern Arizona. The route starts at about 5,484 feet and climbs to roughly 6,904 feet, so plan on a steep, natural-surfaced out-and-back with a total gain of about 1,418 feet. The trail is managed by the Forest Service and falls within the Blue Range Primitive Area. Horses are allowed, but bikes are not, and the trail is not accessible. For the most comfortable weather, aim for late spring or early fall. Typical averages from the Luna, NM weather station, about 21 miles away, show May highs near 75°F and October highs near 71°F, while July and August bring the most wet days. Grant Creek is less than a mile away, and the Sawmill and Largo hikes are within about 2.3 miles. For camping, Blue Crossing Campground sits about 5.4 miles off.
