Sandwich Range Wilderness

Sandwich Range Wilderness is a 35,301-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in New Hampshire managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive backcountry where motorized travel, mechanized equipment, and maintained roads have no place—only foot travel and human-powered recreation are permitted. The landscape is rugged and wild, shaped for non-motorized exploration on foot.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the Wilderness. Visitors come seeking solitude and backcountry immersion in a landscape managed to preserve its undeveloped character. Access is limited to trail entry points around the perimeter; once inside, Leave No Trace ethics are both required and essential to protect the resource. Expect no facilities, no cell service, and terrain that demands self-reliance and careful trip planning.

The hiking season runs from late spring through fall, with summer months offering the most reliable conditions. Winter travel is possible for those with winter skills, but snow and cold create serious hazards. This is a place for experienced backcountry users who understand wilderness travel and are committed to treading lightly on the land.
