South Darby is a hard hike in Wyoming's Jedediah Smith Wilderness, within the Teton Basin Ranger District of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. The trail is an out-and-back that climbs from about 7,020 feet to 8,671 feet, a gain of 1,676 feet over roughly 5.8 miles. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is open from June 1 to October 31. The route is natural-surfaced and allows horses, but not bikes. That makes it a good fit for riders on horseback, and the trail's steep grade and elevation gain set it apart as a serious outing rather than a casual walk. Several other destinations sit within a few miles. Darby Canyon, a climbing area, is about 3.4 miles away, and the Death Canyon Shelf Trail and Devil's Staircase are both within about 4 miles. For an overnight stay, Reunion Flat campground is about 5 miles off.
