Salt River is a hard hike in Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest, within the Greys River Ranger District. The trail is an out-and-back of about 18 miles, with a one-way elevation gain of 1,250 feet, taking you from a low point of 7,092 feet to a high of 8,356 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is on natural surface, with horses and bikes allowed. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Big Piney run to highs around 82°F in July, with lows near 42°F. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the high ground run cooler. The trail is open from May 1 through October 31. Several other routes lie close by. The Fish Creek XC Ski Trail is about a mile away, and the Salt River Pass XC Ski Trail is about 1.6 miles off. For an overnight stay, Allred Flat Campground is about 4.7 miles away. Paddlers can find Salt Creek about 7.8 miles from the trail.
