Box Canyon is a hard hike in Wyoming's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, within the Palisades Ranger District. The trail is an out-and-back that climbs from about 6,185 feet to 8,536 feet, with a total elevation gain of 2,266 feet over a route of about 5.5 miles. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is open year-round. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows both horses and bikes, so it works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. Plan for a long day, with the climb spread across the full length of the route. Dry Canyon lies just 0.7 miles away, and Garden Ridge and Siddoway Fork Creek are both within about 2 miles. For an overnight base, Big Elk Campground & Group Area is about 4.8 miles off.
