Finite Element Boulder is a bouldering area in Virginia, set within the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and managed by the National Park Service. It sits right alongside the Appalachian Trail, about 0.1 mile away, and the Devil's Kitchen climbing area is just as close. The name comes from the bouldering routes, which are all rated on the V scale from V2 to V7, with the hardest being Austin's Seam at V7. The area is a cluster of boulders rather than a single climb. Five routes are listed, and they all fall within the bouldering style. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) route is the median at V5, and Austin's Seam is the hardest at V7. The Truc & Adam Mantle route is at V4, and FEA Arete is the easiest at V2. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Copper Hill run from highs around 69°F in May to 72°F in September, with July the warmest at about 80°F. That station sits a few hundred feet lower than the boulders, so temperatures here run slightly cooler. Other climbing is close by. The Warm-Up Boulder and The Titanic Boulder are each about 0.2 mile away, and the Bennett Springs Loop hike is roughly 1.7 miles off.
