Timber is a bouldering area in Vermont's Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests, within the Middlebury Ranger District. The Forest Service manages the land, and the climbing sits close to two other named climbing areas: Campsite Area and The Pyramid, both about 0.1 mile away. The area has six boulder routes, all rated from V1 to V4 on the V scale. The easiest are File it and Logger, both V1, and the hardest is Grunt -n- go at V4. The routes are bouldering only, so there is no climbing wall to tie into. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Rochester show July highs around 79°F with lows near 55°F, while winter highs stay in the 20s and 30s. That station sits about 1,000 feet lower than the climbing area, so temperatures here run cooler. For more time outdoors, Round Robin (C-7) is a hike about half a mile away. Boondocks, a cross-country skiing area, is roughly 1.3 miles off. Chittenden Brook Campground is about 5 miles away, and paddlers can head to East Creek, also about 5 miles away.
