The Planet of the Apes is a climbing area in southern Utah, within the Escalante Ranger District of the Dixie National Forest. The Forest Service manages the surrounding land, and the name of this crag is a familiar one among climbers in the area. The area is an alpine-style climbing destination, and the routes here range from about 5.9 to 5.11d. Eight routes are listed, with the hardest of them, Nova's Route, at 5.11d. Several of the climbs have names that echo the themes of the Planet of the Apes films, including Dr. Zaius and Damned Dirty Apes. The climbing area sits within a cluster of boulders and crags. Pangaea is about 0.2 miles away, and Distant Drum and Flying Raptor's Area are within half a mile. For a change from the rock, Pine Lake Campground is about 4.5 miles away.
