The Great Western Trail Alternate is a hard hike in Utah's Fishlake National Forest, within the Fremont River Ranger District. It is an out-and-back route of about 13.8 miles, with a total elevation gain of 2,635 feet. The trail starts at a low point of about 7,834 feet and climbs to a high point of about 10,347 feet. The route is long and steep, and it is rated hard. Plan on a full day, and expect to spend several hours on the trail. The Forest Service manages the land. The trail is close to several other destinations. Elkhorn-Deep Creek and Flat Top are both within a mile, and Elkhorn Campground is about 1.7 miles away. The Fremont River Ranger District's river fishing is about 3.6 miles off.
