Cloud Buttress is a climbing area in Oregon, about 3.8 miles from the town of Trail. It sits among several other named climbing areas, with (3)Long Wall and (4)The Cathedral each about 0.1 mile away, so it is easy to pair with them on a single visit. The area has five routes, four of which are sport climbs and one is a top-rope route. The grades range from 5.8 to 5.11c, with the median at 5.10b. Shasta is the top-rope route at 5.8, and Cloud Drifter is the hardest at 5.11c. Soundtracker, Butt Bar Express and The Great Bear are all sport routes, and the first ascents of the last two are credited to Bill Newcomb. For timing, late spring and early fall tend to be the most comfortable. Typical averages from the Lost Creek Dam weather station, about 11 miles away, show May highs around 72°F and September highs around 84°F, with July and August averaging about 90°F. That station sits roughly 1,500 feet lower than the buttress, so temperatures up high run cooler. Paddlers can find Evans Creek about 4.4 miles away and Trail Creek about 4.8 miles away. Hikers have Trail A at about 8.4 miles and Viewpoint Mike Trail at about 10 miles.
