Tidbits South is a 2.4-mile out-and-back hike in the McKenzie River Ranger District of Oregon's Willamette National Forest, managed by the Forest Service. The trail rises from about 4,073 feet to a high point of 4,734 feet, with a total elevation gain of 1,711 feet over the round trip. The steepest stretch comes at about 0.76 miles in, where the grade reaches 50 percent. The route is rated moderate, and the trail surface is natural. Bikes and horses are both allowed, so the hike works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Santiam Junction show July and August highs around 76°F with lows near 42°F, while winter highs there stay in the mid-30s. The Tidbits Trailhead is the starting point, and the trail is open year-round. Plan on about 1.5 hours for the round trip. Nearby, the Goldhill - Quentin Segment hike is about 1.3 miles away, and Tidbits Creek offers canoeing about 1.5 miles off. Tidbits Mountain is about 2.2 miles away, and Lookout Campground sits about 4.3 miles from the trailhead.
