Rim Rock Trail is a moderate hike of about 6.4 miles in the Whitman Ranger District of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in northeast Oregon. The trail is an out-and-back, with a high point of about 4,760 feet and a low of about 4,148 feet. The total elevation gain is about 1,494 feet, so the climb is roughly 589 feet one way. The trail is managed by the Forest Service, and the route reaches its steepest stretch early on, with a grade of about 18% at about 0.56 miles from the start. That makes the first part of the hike the most challenging, and the return trip mirrors the ascent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run from highs in the low 80s in July and August to about 73°F in September, with fewer wet days than any other time of year. That station sits a few hundred feet lower than the trail, so temperatures on the ridge run a little cooler. The trip takes about three hours. Millers Lane Campground is about 0.8 miles away, and the Jeep Ride Trail and the Ponderosa Trail are both within a mile. Union Creek Campground is about 1.9 miles away.
