Coyote Cove Trail is an easy, short out-and-back hike in the Whitman Ranger District of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, on the land surrounding Phillips Reservoir in northeast Oregon. The Bureau of Reclamation manages the area, and the trail is less than a third of a mile long, with a total round-trip elevation gain of about 160 feet. The route starts at roughly 4,148 feet and peaks at about 4,256 feet, with the steepest stretch coming within the first 0.14 miles at a grade of about 11%. The high point is the trail's highest point, and the climb is front-loaded, with the bulk of the ascent done early on. The whole trip takes about half an hour. For comfortable weather, aim for late spring or early fall. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Baker City show May highs around 70°F and September highs around 79°F, with July and August highs near 88°F. That station sits roughly 900 feet below the trail, so temperatures on the trail run cooler. Several other trails sit close by, including the Phillips Lake North Shoreline Trail about 0.6 miles away and the Deer Lick Trail at 0.7 miles. Union Creek Campground, about 1.5 miles off, offers a place to stay, and the Powder River Recreation Area Paved Trail lies about 1.4 miles away.
