Rainy Lake is an easy, short out-and-back hike of about a mile in the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness, part of the Hood River Ranger District of Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon. It's managed by the Forest Service and sits on natural trail surface. The route runs between a low point of about 4,078 feet and a high of about 4,155 feet, with a total elevation gain of about 257 feet over the round trip. The steepest stretch comes at about 0.32 miles in, with a grade of about 7 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. At the nearby Government Camp weather station, July and August average highs around 70°F with only about four wet days a month. Winter brings typical highs in the mid-30s and rain on most days. The hike takes about half an hour. Rainy-Wahtum is about half a mile away and North Lake about 0.7 miles, with Black Lake campground at about 1.2 miles and Herman Creek, a canoeing spot, at about 3.3 miles.
