Wyeth is a hard hike in Oregon's Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, managed by the Forest Service. The route is an out-and-back of about 12 miles, with a total elevation gain of nearly 4,700 feet. The climb is front-loaded, and the steepest stretch comes within half a mile of the start, where the grade reaches about 47 percent. The high point is 4,052 feet, and the trail drops back to the starting elevation of about 560 feet. The trip takes roughly 6.5 hours, so plan on a full day. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Snowden, Washington, show July and August highs around 79°F with lows near 49°F. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the route run cooler. Wyeth Campground is about half a mile away, and the Gorge Trail #400 starts less than half a mile off. Climbers can head to Windy Slab, about a mile away, and the Historic 1876 Wagon Road is about 1.3 miles from the trail.
