Marie Lake is an easy, short hike in the Diamond Peak Wilderness, inside the Middle Fork Ranger District of Oregon's Willamette National Forest. The trail is about 0.4 miles long and sits within wilderness, so it's a compact outing that fits easily into a day spent exploring this remote corner of the forest. The route is an out-and-back that starts and ends at nearly the same elevation, with a low of about 6,031 feet and a high of about 6,077 feet. The climb is flat for most of the way, and the steepest point comes early, about 0.08 miles from the start, with a grade of about 3 percent. Horses are allowed, and bikes are not, on a natural surface. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Odell Lake run from highs around 73 to 74°F in July and August, with only about three wet days a month. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures up high run cooler. Winter is cold and snowy, with highs around 35°F and about 10 snow days a month from December through February. The hike takes about half an hour. It's open year-round. Crater Butte and Rockpile are both about 0.4 miles away, and Diamond Peak Climbers' Trail is about 0.9 miles away. Summit Lake campground is about 2.1 miles off.
