Lava Flats Loop is a 1.6-mile loop hike in the Sweet Home Ranger District of Oregon's Willamette National Forest. The route is easy, with a total elevation gain of about 386 feet. It starts at around 3,485 feet and reaches a high point of about 3,554 feet before returning to nearly the same starting elevation. The climb is rolling, and the steepest stretch comes about 0.07 miles in at a 10% grade. The loop works well as a short outing, and it pairs easily with other nearby trails. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical July and August highs reach about 76°F with lows near 42°F, according to averages from the Santiam Junction weather station about 3.7 miles away. Winter there is cold, with typical January highs around 38°F and lows near 24°F. Pumice Loop, a cross-country skiing route, sits just 0.1 mile away, and Lava View Loop is 0.4 mile off. Fish Lake Remount Depot Cabins is 0.9 mile away for an overnight stay, and Crescent Mountain offers another hike 1.3 miles away.
